Records Continue to Fall for Tracksters
The BSMS track and field squads headed outside for the first of two meets held in Darlington last week. On Tuesday (4th) Darlington and BSMS co-hosted a triangular which also had Cassville competing. There was no letting up as both squads started where they left off coming out of the indoor season. On the boy's side, Ben Sigwarth (100m), Aaron Pulvermacher (200m), Jeremiah Bailey (HJ and LJ), Jacob Winslow (shot) and the 4x100 relay (Sigwarth, Aaron Coffey, Ethan Shetler,Lance Lierman) all claimed first place finishes. Aaron Pulvermacher's time of 24.54 set a new Tri-Op record in the 200m dash. Other outstanding performances were turned in by: Ben Sigwarth (2nd 200m), Ethan Shetler (3rd 100m, 200m), Troy Turpin (2nd 1600m), Jeremiah Bailey (3rd 110m HH), Josh Redfearn (2nd 3200m), Nic Davis (3rd 3200m), Matt Davis (3rd 300m H), Lance Lierman (2nd LJ), Alan Montayne (3rd LJ), Christian Rask (2nd shot) Jacob Winslow (2nd discus), Shane O'Neill (3rd discus), the 4x400 relay (Josh Cole, Preston Martin, Nic Davis, Ryan Krueger) 2nd, the 4x200 relay (Tyler Walton, DJ Hamp, Reid Scott, Alan Montayne) 2nd, and the 4x800 relay (Cole, Martin, Nic Davis, Krueger) also finished 2nd.
For the ladies: Paige Murphy (200m), Brianna Leahy (shot, discus), Emma Lawrence (100HH, 300HH), the 4x100 relay (Matthews, Murphy, Law, Lawrence), and the 4x200 relay (Murphy, Matthews, Law, Jerry) all took home first place finishes. In the discus Brianna Leahy (118' 5") set new Shullsburg and Tri-Op records. Remaining top three place finishers for the girls were; Chloe Matthews (100m 2nd), Calli Jerry (100m, LJ, 3rd), Trinity Law (200m, 2nd), Katie Pingel (2nd 100HH, 300 H, and 3rd PV), Kristy Kruger (2nd 800m), Abigail Pahnke (2nd 3200m), while the 4x800 relay (Michelle Greenfield, Sarah Lee, Eve Notrott, Pahnke) claimed 2nd place.
On Friday, April 7th, both squads loaded up the bus and headed back to Redbird country to compete in the annual nine team Darlington Invitational. The 4x800 relay ( Pulvermacher, Redfearn, Germaine, Turpin) got the boys started by setting a new meet and Tri-Op record with the time of 8:37.54 taking home first place. Jeremiah Bailey continued the run on records - setting new Shullsburg and Tri-Op records in winning the HJ with a leap of 6' 3.5". He also took 3rd place in the 110HH, and 2nd in the TJ (39' 3.25"). The 4x100 relay (Coffey, Lierman, Sigwarth, Shetler), the 4x400 relay (Shetler, C. O'Neill, Turpin, Germaine), Ben Sigwarth (100m), Josh Redfearn (800m), Aaron Coffey (LJ), Jacob Winslow (shot) all claimed first place finishes. Top three finishers included; Ryan Krueger (2nd 1600m), Ben Sigwarth (2nd LJ), Caleb O'Neill (3rd TJ), Christian Rask (2nd shot), Jacob Winslow (2nd discus), the 4x200 relay (Coffey, Sigwarth, Bailey, Shetler) 2nd, and the "B" 4x100 relay team (C. O'Neill, Tyler Walton, Oren Charles, Alan Montanye) grabbed 3rd place.
The girls squad not to be outdone by the boys, also set numerous records on the afternoon. New meet records were set by Emma Lawrence in the 300H (48.54), and by the 4x200 relay
(Lawrence, Murphy, Matthews, Law) with a time of 1:51. 64. A new Shullsburg and Tri-Op record was set by Brianna Leahy in the discus with a winning heave of 124' 7". Others grabbing medals on the day were: Emma Lawrence (100mHH 1st, TJ 2nd), Katie Pingel (1st TJ, 2nd 100m HH), Trinity Law (1st HJ), Brianna Leahy (2nd shot), the 4x800 relay(Mi. Greenfield, Lee, Notrott, Kruger) 3rd, and the 4x100 relay (Jerry, Matthews, Pingel,Law) took 1st place (54.24).
Finally on Saturday, April 8th a number of girls travelled to the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater to compete in the all division WTFA (Wisconsin Track and Field Association) State Indoor Championships. Athletes have to meet qualifying standards to qualify for this annual meet. Leading the way for BSMS was Junior Brianna Leahy who tossed the shot 37' 8" on her last throw to move up two spots and claim third place in the prestigious meet. She is only the second girl to ever place (Brittany Davis 2nd 800m, 6th 400m, 2015) for BSMS. There were other outstanding performances including two new records turned in on the day. Paige Murphy and Emma Lawrence both set new Benton and Tri-Op records in the 55m dash ( 7.76) and 55m HH (9.08) respectively. Emma took 11th place out of 49 hurdlers that competed while Paige also performed well in the LJ, jumping a season best 16' 2.5" to grab 15th place in the field of 47
jumpers. Sophomore Trinity Law who came in seeded 32nd jumped a season's best 5' 0" and finished in 10th place only one miss from placing 7th. Senior Katie Pingel once again qualified for the Triple Jump finals - with a leap of 33' 8.5" to take 9th. She also had a season best 9.78 in the 55m high hurdles. Running in her first WTFA meet, freshman Chloe Matthews ran a season best 7.99 in the 55m trials. The girls (Lawrence, Murphy, Law, Matthews) also competed in the 4x200 relay (1:54.39)to finish 19th.
A busy week lies ahead for the track teams as they travel to Monroe on Monday (10th) for the Green/Lafayette Meet and they split their squads on Thursday (13th) some traveling to Cassville for the Cassville Invitational and the remainder head to Port Byron, IL for the annual Riverdale Invitational.
